The exhibition will last until September 22, 2019
Cristina David’s work continues and develops the legacy of the golden era of conceptual art of the 1970s. The idea and its artistic form are therefore interchangeable. The material form can be repeated or changed over time under the influence of the concept. The author’s natural medium is text supplemented with photographs or videos that are used to express her idea more precisely. Through her works, Cristina David looks ironically and playfully at her life and her surroundings. The central point of the exhibition in Klubovna is Cristina herself or rather Cristina’s height of 154 cm, which was converted to the unit of measure of 1 Cristina (1 Cristina = 154 cm). In the centre of the city of Brno and around the gallery, there are signs, which in a new measure indicate the distance to the Klubovna. The gallery space itself is then re-measured and converted to a new unit. These two gestures are complemented by older works dealing with the author’s height. The old passports, where the author managed to “improved” her height by two centimetres, are a record of small anarchy with deliberately misspelt information in an official document. A collection of black-and-white photographs of the author side by side with people whose head is cut off in the sense of the mythical Prokrústés, because the camera lens relentlessly places the author in the centre of her interest. Putting yourself at the centre of the universe is usually seen as an unbearable manifestation of egoism. Cristina David’s work, however, is an ironic grin over the famous Napoleonic complex.
Cristina David lives in Bucharest. She graduated in mathematics and later continued her studies in art at the National University of Art in Bucharest and completed her master’s studies at Bergen, Norway.
